Rinse the Rice: This is crucial! Place the rice in a bowl and cover with cold water. Swirl the rice gently with your hand for about 30 seconds. Drain the water completely. Repeat this rinsing process 2-3 times until the water runs almost clear. This removes excess starch, preventing sticky rice.

Combine Rice & Water: Add the rinsed rice to a medium saucepan. Pour in the water and add the salt (if using).

Bring to a Boil: Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat.

Reduce Heat & Simmer: Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to the lowest setting possible – you want a very gentle simmer. Cover the saucepan tightly with a lid. Don’t lift the lid during this process!

Cook for 18-20 Minutes: Let the rice simmer undisturbed for exactly 18-20 minutes. Resist the urge to peek!

Rest (Important!): After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for another 10 minutes. This allows the steam to redistribute and ensures perfectly fluffy rice.

Fluff & Serve: Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork before serving.

- Rice Type Matters: Basmati rice is ideal for boiling as it’s known for its fluffy texture.
- Don’t Lift the Lid! Lifting the lid releases steam, which disrupts the cooking process and can result in unevenly cooked rice.
- Adjust Water: If you prefer slightly firmer rice, reduce the amount of water by a tablespoon or two. For softer rice, add an extra tablespoon or two.
